Demi Lovato’s ex-fiance, actor Max Ehrich, is reportedly facing serious legal trouble. Ehrich, who was engaged to the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer for two months in 2020, was arrested in Florida on Tuesday night on domestic violence charges, according to TMZ.
Law enforcement sources revealed that the 34-year-old actor was taken into custody for battery on a person aged 65 or older. The charge is said to involve a dispute with a family member. However, Ehrich was reportedly released on Wednesday after posting a $1,000 bail.
Hours before his arrest, Ehrich raised concerns among fans due to his troubling social media activity. The “High School Musical 3: Senior Year” actor shared a series of Instagram posts and behaved erratically during a livestream, as reported by Daily Mail. At one point, Ehrich posted a text image that read, “My heart is broken. Link in bio give zelle to my mom,” alongside what appeared to be his mother’s phone number.
Fans quickly flooded the comments section with messages of concern. One user wrote, “Max, you NEED to take a break from the internet for a bit, please.” Another added, “An actor I can’t even remember where I’ve seen him from, Max Ehrich, is live on IG attacking his mom,” referring to a moment when Ehrich’s mother, Rhonda Ehrich, appeared in a livestream. A third commented, “Is he in active psychosis or something? What is happening?”
Ehrich and Lovato, 33, began dating in 2020. The “Cowboy Christmas Romance” star proposed after just four months, and Lovato announced their engagement on Instagram on July 23 of that year. In a now-deleted post, she wrote, “I knew I loved you the moment I met you. It was something I can’t describe to anyone who hasn’t experienced it firsthand but luckily you did too.”
Lovato continued, “I’ve never felt so unconditionally loved by someone in my life (other than my parents) flaws and all. You never pressure me to be anything other than myself. And you make me want to be the best version of myself.” Although she expressed feeling honored to accept his hand in marriage, the couple called off their engagement two months later.
In a tragic turn, another one of Lovato’s exes, Guilherme Bomba Vasconcelos—an MMA fighter she dated in 2017—took his own life in October 2024. Their relationship ended the same year.
