In a high-voltage ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 clash against India, Australia’s all-rounder Annabel Sutherland showcased an outstanding bowling performance, claiming her maiden five-wicket haul in Women’s One Day Internationals (WODIs). Her effective spell helped Australia restrict India to 330 all out in 48.5 overs, following a challenging start with the ball.
### Sutherland Breaks India’s Opening Stand
Batting first, India’s openers Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal provided a flying start with a massive 155-run partnership. Mandhana scored a solid 80, while Rawal surpassed her maiden World Cup half-century, making 75.
Sutherland made a breakthrough by dismissing Rawal with a sharp short ball that was caught by Ellyse Perry at deep square leg, breaking the dangerous opening stand.
### Late Wicket Frenzy by Sutherland
As India approached the 300-run mark, Sutherland struck again, taking crucial wickets in quick succession. She dismissed Jemimah Rodrigues, who scored a quick-fire 33 off 21 balls and was caught by Beth Mooney at mid-on, followed by Richa Ghosh, who made 32.
Sutherland then cleaned up Kranti Gaud and Shree Charani to complete her five-wicket haul. Her brilliance in the final overs saw India collapse from 294/4 to 330 all out in just 48.5 overs.
### Impressive Stats for Sutherland
Sutherland finished with figures of 5/40 from 9.5 overs, marking her maiden WODI fifer. This performance pushed her tally past 50 wickets, now standing at 53 from 45 matches, with an average of 20.60 and an economy rate of 4.55.
Remarkably, 22 of her wickets have come in 10 games against India at an impressive average of 15.63. Her World Cup wicket tally now stands at 13 at an average of 15.15.
### A Historic Milestone
Annabel Sutherland’s five-wicket haul makes her only the third Australian bowler to achieve this feat in a Women’s World Cup, joining the likes of Tina Macpherson and Lyn Fullston (who achieved it twice).
Despite Sutherland’s heroics, Australia conceded over 300 runs — the first time they have done so in a Women’s World Cup match.
### Sophie Molineux’s Three-Wicket Contribution
Left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux also made an impact despite going for 75 runs in her 10 overs. She picked up three key wickets and now has a total of 29 wickets from 15 WODIs at an excellent average of 14.86. Against India, Molineux has taken nine wickets at an average of 28.33.
