OpenAI’s Sora 2 video generation platform has once again come under fire for offenses against intellectual property holders and famous individuals due to unlicensed use of copyrighted materials and likenesses. This time, media star Bryan Cranston has raised concerns over representations of himself on the platform.
After filing a formal complaint with the SAG-AFTRA organization, Bryan Cranston’s issue caught significant attention. In response, OpenAI stated that it will continue to “strengthen” Sora 2’s “guardrails” to prevent the unlicensed use of famous characters and intellectual property.
SAG-AFTRA released a statement on social media this week on behalf of Bryan Cranston, announcing that they have been in active communication with OpenAI to address and stop the unauthorized depictions. Following these discussions, OpenAI has agreed to block depictions of Cranston without his consent.
Since its launch a couple of weeks ago, Sora 2 has drawn significant attention due to its impressive ability to generate AI-driven videos from virtually any prompt. However, the platform’s rushed release has also led to multiple issues concerning copyrighted content.
The Motion Picture Association (MPA) publicly denounced the program for its unauthorized use of actors’ likenesses within its organization. Despite this, the platform has continued to face challenges, including controversies over unlicensed depictions of notable figures such as Martin Luther King Jr.
As OpenAI works to improve Sora 2’s safeguards, the ongoing concerns highlight the importance of balancing innovation with respect for intellectual property rights.
