University of Michigan economics professor Justin Wolfers has harshly criticized President Donald Trump’s recent claims about the U.S. economy, suggesting that the president’s statements are not only false but so shocking that they raise concerns about his grasp on reality.
In a recent interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, Trump declared that he is leading “the greatest economy we’ve ever had” and insisted that the United States is doing “phenomenally well.” However, Wolfers, appearing on CNN’s Kaitlan Collins show “The Source,” strongly disagreed.
“Look, every word the president just said is a lie,” Wolfers said. He went further, expressing his worry that these falsehoods might indicate “a break with reality inside the man’s mind.”
Wolfers emphasized that Trump’s comments go beyond mere political spin and are “flatly contradicted by government data,” according to The Daily Beast. “I can tell you that because I’m a statistics nerd,” he explained. “You can go to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. They’ve got people in supermarkets all across the country, and almost every category of goods or services sees the prices rising.”
As of late 2025, the annual inflation rate had increased to 3.0 percent, up from a low of 2.3 percent in April 2025. Prices for groceries, housing, and energy have continued to rise, which has heightened public concerns about affordability. Economists largely agree that tariffs implemented during the Trump administration have contributed to these price increases for both consumers and businesses.
Wolfers also warned that denying the existence of inflation “crosses a line.” He pointed out that it’s not only the statisticians at the Bureau of Labor Statistics who recognize these trends. “When companies are giving their earnings reports, they’re telling us they’re raising their prices,” he noted. “Every single viewer on the other side of this television set knows exactly what’s happening, which is prices are rising.”
This candid assessment highlights the growing disconnect between official claims from the White House and the real economic experiences faced by many Americans today.
