On Tuesday, Feb. 3, the Villanova Newsroom announced that the University has been named a Top Producer for the Fulbright scholarship for the 18th consecutive year. With 17 Fulbright recipients, Villanova joins prestigious schools such as Harvard and Yale, along with local colleges like Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr, and Haverford.
“Our students consistently excel as scholars and leaders, applying their Villanova education to build cross-cultural understanding and create lasting impact around the world,” said University President Rev. Peter M. Donohue, O.S.A., Ph.D., in a press release. “I offer my heartfelt congratulations to this year’s Fulbright honorees, as well as to the faculty and staff whose guidance helps make these achievements possible.”
The Fulbright Program, established in 1946, is funded through an annual appropriation made by the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. It is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program, allowing students in the United States to increase mutual understanding by interacting with individuals from other countries.
At Villanova, the Fulbright competition is administered through the Center for Research and Fellowships (CRF). In this cycle, 42 of Villanova’s 71 applicants have been named semi-finalists for the award. According to the University press release, these individuals will be notified over the next three months if they are selected to go abroad in the following school year.
Those selected will join more than 400,000 teachers, recent university graduates, scientists, researchers, and artists who have participated in the program since its inception. The Fulbright Program operates in more than 160 countries worldwide and partners with governments, corporations, and foundations to help implement and support its mission.
