**Background: GST Rate Changes**
Earlier this month, the GST Council approved a simplification of the Goods and Services Tax structure by reducing tax rates on many commonly used goods to boost consumer spending. The new GST structure, effective from September 22, reduces the number of slabs from four (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) to two: 5% and 18%.
Several FMCG products, including hair oil, soap, face powders, shampoos, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and all food items, now attract a lower GST rate of 5%, down from 18%. Additionally, GST on room air conditioners and televisions larger than 32 inches has been reduced to 18%.
