Denny Hamlin, the NASCAR legend, recently opened up about his teammate Ty Gibbs’ performance at the Mobil 1 301, shedding light on the intense on-track battle that unfolded between the two during the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
### Tense Teammate Clash at New Hampshire
During Stage 2 of the race, Hamlin, a seasoned playoff contender, was aggressively attempting a move while Gibbs, who is not in the playoffs this season, was obstructing his path without giving any space to yield. Their fierce competition led to multiple contacts over about ten laps, culminating in Hamlin spinning Gibbs into the outside wall with significant force. This incident prematurely ended Gibbs’ race due to damage to his car.
On his Actions Detrimental podcast, Hamlin expressed his frustration:
> “I would think that Ty would want one of us to win a championship. It’s his name on the building.”
### Hamlin Reflects on the Incident
Speaking with Bob Pockrass, Hamlin candidly admitted to making a mistake during the incident:
> “We made contact in one. It was like the fourth or fifth time we made contact, but it eventually ended up getting spun. I made a mistake in turn one, so, yeah, I would have made a mistake with anybody in that position. I was trying to get, get by him. That was a task in itself.”
He also noted that while the situation was “crazy unfortunate,” both he and Gibbs are committed to winning championships for their family and the team:
> “I’ll let leadership, kind of, you know, quarterback it however they’d like to, but obviously us, the 20, 19 are all trying to win a championship for their family, so it’s crazy, unfortunate while we’re racing the way we are.”
### Respect and Recognition for Ty Gibbs
Despite the clash, Hamlin acknowledged his ongoing dialogue with Gibbs, emphasizing that he has more communication with him than any other teammate. He recognizes Gibbs’ talent but also believes that the young driver still has much to learn about racing strategy and managing distance on the track.
### Hamlin’s Successful Season So Far
This season, Hamlin has enjoyed remarkable success, securing five wins. One standout victory came at the World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, a milestone that marked the 200th Toyota Cup Series win. This achievement puts Hamlin just one victory shy of tying Kevin Harvick for 10th place on NASCAR’s all-time wins list, with 59 career wins.
Known for his mastery of race strategy — particularly in managing tires and fuel — Hamlin’s experience and skill have made him a formidable competitor throughout the season. As the playoffs continue, Hamlin’s focus remains on racing smart and pushing toward a championship.
