*COLUMBIA, S.C.* — South Carolina law enforcement officials are urging patience after the father of Logan Federico, a college student murdered in downtown Columbia, accused them of failing to keep the repeat offender responsible for her death behind bars.
During a satellite hearing of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee on Oversight held September 29 in Charlotte, Steve Federico, Logan’s father, condemned South Carolina’s judicial system for systemic failures that allowed her alleged killer, 30-year-old Alexander Dickey, to commit the May murder despite a criminal history spanning over a decade.
Dickey’s rap sheet includes dozens of felony and misdemeanor charges throughout the Midlands region of South Carolina.
Federico singled out 5th Circuit Solicitor Byron Gipson, accusing him of failing to communicate following his daughter’s murder, which took place during a home invasion in the student-dense Old Shandon neighborhood.
In an interview with Trey Gowdy on Fox News, Federico called for Dickey to receive the death penalty and expressed disbelief that Gipson’s office had not issued a statement advocating for it.
“I could sit down and explain the whole process of how it failed, how South Carolina failed Logan, the lack of communication,” Federico told lawmakers. “What y’all did? You woke up a beast. And you pissed off the wrong daddy. And I’m going to put it out there, and I’m not going to be quiet.”
