“I should shut up,” Democratic consultant Paul Begala said as a Republican lawmaker proceeded to give Democrats what Begala estimated could be between two to five seats in the House next year.
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican from New York, appeared on CNN alongside Begala on Sunday. Begala is best known for being an adviser to then-President Bill Clinton.
During the discussion, the topic of the recent “No Kings” protests came up. Begala pointed out that, in his political view, Republicans are digging their own graves by attacking those who participated in the protests.
“When you people attack those folks, all you’re doing is setting yourselves up for a landslide loss,” he said. “Believe me, I watched my party do it in 2009.”
Malliotakis then tried to connect the protesters with “communists,” which led Begala to respond, “Each of those attacks is another 2-5 seats in the House. Keep going! I should shut up.”
He added, “It’s self-destructive.”
