**S S Rajamouli Announces ‘Varanasi’ as the First Indian Film Filmed for IMAX at Grand Globetrotter Event in Hyderabad**
Hyderabad recently witnessed a star-studded gathering at the grand Globetrotter event, attended by celebrated personalities including S S Rajamouli, M M Keeravani, Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and others. The highlight of the evening was an exciting announcement by filmmaker S S Rajamouli regarding his upcoming film *Varanasi*.
Rajamouli revealed that *Varanasi* will be the first film in Indian cinema to be **filmed for IMAX**, a groundbreaking technological advancement. Taking to the stage, he clarified a common misconception about IMAX films. He explained that many films released on IMAX screens are merely “blown up” versions of the original format, which is not true IMAX.
He elaborated, saying, “My films like *Baahubali* and *RRR* were in the 1:1.9 format.” To illustrate the difference, the blockbuster director showcased the 100 feet x 130 feet giant screen behind him—the biggest ever—and explained the distinction between the standard and true IMAX formats.
Rajamouli then shared a full-screen visual on the massive display and stated, “Our film *Varanasi* will be screened in full screen. It is filmed for IMAX!” Proudly adding, “I’m so proud to say that we are introducing new technology to Telugu Cinema — premium large-scale format. It is filmed for IMAX.”
The announcement ignited excitement among the audience, who went into a frenzy of applause and cheers.
In an attempt to showcase the *Varanasi* trailer in full-screen IMAX format, Rajamouli encountered a technical glitch. He expressed his regret and informed the crowd that powering the huge screen required 45 generators. After a brief delay, the trailer was finally played in all its glory, earning a roaring response from the enthusiastic audience.
Earlier in the day, actor Prithviraj Sukumaran spoke about how he became part of the project. Reflecting on the experience, he said, “The famous S S Rajamouli narration that my friend Prabhas told me so much about, started. Five minutes into the narration, I was blown away. For the rest of the 3 hours, I listened not as an actor being pitched a story but like a little boy holding the next edition of his favourite comic book! The scale, the vision, the ambition — everything was India’s greatest contemporary filmmaking, pushing his own limits to never-before-seen territory.”
