By MATT KING [email protected] IRONTON The Arcadia Valley girls basketball team found its greatest defensive success on Tuesday evening when coaxing Fredericktown into playing a faster style. The Lady Tigers maintained a shutout through the duration of the first quarter, then thwarted a steady comeback bid early in the second half for a 47-28 home victory. Braelyn Turnbough had 15 points and four assists while Hattie Vinyard provided 10 points and eight rebounds inside for Arcadia Valley (2-0). Addison Gallaher chipped in eight points off the bench, including consecutive driving layups around high screens to seal the win. The Lady Tigers closed with a 20-5 run over the last 11 minutes. Fredericktown (1-1) ended the opening stanza 0-of-9 from the field with nine turnovers, and trailed 15-0 after Turnbough curled from the top of the circle and sank a runner just before time expired. But senior Lauren Hale became more involved in helping the Lady Cats break pressure, and crashed the offensive glass to score nine points exclusively in the second quarter. The halftime margin stood at 25-13 before Laila Stephens produced seven of her nine points in a hurry. She drained a 21-footer from straight away, and drew contact on a made runner moments later. The momentum shifted back toward Arcadia Valley following a questionable call as Turnbough tried to draw a charging foul. A free throw brought Fredericktown within 27-23. Turnbough responded by dribbling end to end for an aggressive layup, and Callie Hinkle was rewarded with free throws after diving to earn a steal near the midcourt logo. Annabelle Adams took an outlet pass behind the retreating defense for an uncontested layup, and the margin was restored to 40-25 when Gallaher knocked down a 14-foot jumper. The Lady Tigers made 14-of-19 free throws compared to 8-of-14 by the Lady Cats, who committed 20 turnovers while forcing 17. Fredericktown sophomore Brylie Allgier burned Woodland with six 3-pointers in the season opener, but sank her only field goal against AV with 2: 36 remaining. Hinkle guarded her admirably for about 2 ½ quarters, and Annabelle Adams took over that assignment after generating four steals during the first half. Lillie Adams netted an early transition layup between baskets by Vinyard on strong moves in the low post. Turnbough then swished a 3-pointer on quick release to create more separation. The 5 p. m. contest drew a sizable crowd as an appetizer before the Arcadia Valley Thanksgiving Tournament resumed with boys action. The Lady Tigers host Grandview on Monday before encountering a challenging stretch of three straight road games at North County, Delta and Potosi. Sydney Dunnahoo grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for Fredericktown.
